DOBBS FERRY FOOD PANTRY
Our local pantry has been open since 2011
Located at South Presbyterian Church in Dobbs Ferry.
It is run entirely by volunteers, and is open from 10:30 a.m.
to noon on each Wednesday. On the last Wednesday of each month, it is also open from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. T
he first leaders of the pantry were Molly Rodriguez and her husband Benny, who approached Rev. Joe Gilmore about this project. He agreed, and the pantry has had its home there since. Recently, Molly and Benny stepped down from leadership, and Gretchen Skaggs and Vera Halpenny are now in charge.
The pantry receives food items from the Feeding Westchester food bank and from local churches and organizations, including ours. Individuals can drop food into donation bins at DFLC, Stop & Shop, and other places in the area. South Presbyterian also has a bin outside the church. They receive food donations from Mom's Organic Market, The Shop @ Ardsley, and NY Bagel Authority, among other places. Fresh food items are added from a garden at South Presbyterian and one at Springhurst Elementary School. The food pantry is a popular organization to receive items donated from house parties, community events, from birthday parties and other family events, and from people like you and me, wanting to make a difference.
Monetary donations are also accepted gratefully, and Dobbs Ferry Lutheran contributes a donation from our annual budget.
Popular items needed are:
peanut butter
cereal
beans
coffee
diapers (sizes 5 & 6) & "Pull-Up's."
Please do not purchase overly large sizes of items, since most of the clientele have to carry these things home. Think of the Food Pantry whenever you shop!

KOINONIA CAMP & RETREAT CENTER
Its more than a camp. It is also a beautiful retreat center located across the river in Highland Lake NY, which offers many interesting programs. DFLC has been a part of these retreats in the past. 2. If you go to their web page, koinoniany.org. you will see all the programs and events they offer for church groups, families, etc.
Also on the tab for "Partners & Affiliates," you will see DFLC listed first on the list! We have supported this program for many years through our First Fruits donations.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has three expressions (or groupings): there are over 10,000 congregations, 65 regional Synods, and the church wide organization. The Metropolitan New York Synod is our regional expression of the ELCA and is led by Bishop Paul Egensteiner and his staff. Our largest first fruits item that we support is our Synod itself.
Our Synod covers all five boroughs of New York City, all of Long Island, and seven upstate counties (Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, Westchester). The Synod is divided geographically into 18 conferences, each represented by a Dean who serves as a liaison between the Bishop's office and the congregations in their area.
The over 170 parishes in our territory are greatly diverse, from rural outposts to inner-city storefront churches, with a good dose of suburban mid-sized congregations as Well Our location blesses us with great ethnic diversity; you can worship in over a dozen languages, including Arabic, Cantonese, German, Mandarin, Norwegian, Spanish, and American Sign Language.
