Verse of the Week
"Refresh my heart in Christ."
Philemon 20b
The Second Reading for this coming Sunday, September 5 is the entire book of Philemon. My way of thinking (Some would describe it as "unique." I prefer "refreshing.") compels me to write about this little gem of a book.
Philemon has 325 words in Greek and 460 words in the English of the New Revised Standard Version. Thus, I find it illustrative that there is a very good chance that this reflection on Philemon may be longer than the actual book of Philemon as it appears in the New Testament.
This reality sums up what I believe is one of the great challenges of the Christian life, which we could summarize in a single sentence. We spend more time reading ABOUT the Bible than we do actually reading the Bible. Philemon issues a wake-up call that all of us-pastor and people-need to hear. Our words are only the beginning of the things that overshadow the place of Scripture in our lives.
In light of that fact, it is amazing to me that Philemon's brevity takes nothing away from the message of this little gem of a book. We could even very reasonably say that Philemon's brevity ADDS to the message. That is because--in spite of its brevity--the book of Philemon still manages to point to Christ in very significant ways.
Christ motivates our good works (verse 6). Christ inspires us to shun heavy handedness and act in loving ways toward one another (verses 8 and 9). Christ refreshes our hearts (verse 20).
This is very consistent with the way in which we, as Lutherans, read Scripture. We stand in the same line as all Christians who find in Christ the center of the Scriptures, so that reading the Scriptures is one of the ways in which we can encounter Christ, and brevity serves that purpose well, because it means that we must pay attention so that nothing is wasted. I suspect that is something that Paul had to deal with in writing to Philemon since he was doing so from prison, where deliverable writing surfaces must have been scarce. The result is a little gem of a book in which not a single word is wasted and through which Paul invites us to faithful decisions that come in the midst of faithful lives, which apparently both he and Philemon knew well, and which Christ invites us to learn.
I hit four hundred words exactly--more than the Greek--fewer than the English. That is a refreshing place to be.

Oikos is a discussion group for adults that meets around topics relevant to faith and life. The first Oikos for this program year will be at 7:30 PM on Friday, October 1. Part of the evening will be spent organizing Oikos for the year and part of the evening will be spent on a topic that is still in development. We will meet at the home of Sheri Cohen. Please be in touch with Sheri (scohenny@verizon.net) if you plan to attend and don't forget to bring along food or a beverage to share.
Youth Bible Study
Starting this Fall: New Sunday Morning Class for All Youth Who Have Been Confirmed
This September, DFLC will be offering a new Sunday morning class, from 9:00 to 10:00 (in a location to be announced), for those youth who have been confirmed (grades 8-12). We'll meet for discussions on the Bible and relevant issues. It will be a great opportunity to strengthen old friendships, to make some new ones and to study God's Word. Come join us! For more information contact Deborah Selmon at Littled528@yahoo.com.
Healing Service
Prayer for Healing is one of God's many gifts to the Church. Prayer for Healing is available to anyone who senses the need for God's touch in body, mind, or spirit at any time. Some times in our lives call for a much more intentional encounter with Prayer for Healing. This is certainly true at this time for a number of DFLC's members and friends. So, as a community of faith called by God's promise of wholeness and peace, we will gather to pray for healing at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 8. All are welcome.
Rally Day, Sunday, September 12 starting at 9:00 AM
"God is Down Under and Up Over!" That is the theme for this year's celebration of Rally Day at DFLC. ("Rally Day" marks the start of a new Sunday School year.) That is a great reason to celebrate and celebrate we will. The Sunday School staff has pulled together activities and festivities for all of us to enjoy. Join us as we "visit" Australia and hop into a new year of learning about loving God and each other! Deborah Meurlin (littled528@yahoo.com) is happy to answer questions.
Tappan Zee Conference Meeting
There are many ways in which our Metropolitan New York Synod calls us together both the share stories and to reflect on our work for the sake of God's Good News. One special opportunity to do just that is on Sunday, September 19, when the Tappan Zee Conference will meet from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasantville. Members of congregations are invited to attend, to learn, to share, and Pastor Scott would welcome the company. Please let him know (pastorsjp@optonline.net) if you would like to attend on behalf of DFLC.
Giving Statements
DFLC is very grateful to those who support our ministry through financial contributions. We want to help our members and friends be faithful stewards of all that God has given us. In order to facilitate such stewardship, statements of giving for January through June of 2010 should have arrived in your home last week. Much work went into making sure that the statements are as useful as possible. If you have not already done so, please take the time to review your statement. If you have any questions about your statement, or if our records do not match yours, we invite you to contact Helen Soyk. Helen enters the data for us and is very happy to respond to questions. Helen can also point you in the right direction if further investigation is needed.
Planning to Travel?
Other congregations enjoy visitors as much as we do at DFLC! If you plan to travel this summer, consider attending a local church in whatever place you are visiting. You can find ELCA congregations by visiting the ELCA website (www.elca.org) and clicking on "Find a Congregation" (in the upper right corner), but vacation time is also a good opportunity to experience the worship of another Christian denomination. When you attend a church while on vacation, please bring back a bulletin and give it either to Pastor Scott or the church office. We will work them into a display at the church that everyone can enjoy.
Church Office Hours
Regular church office hours will resume next week. The church office is open Mondays and Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Fridays, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Challenge from "Pre-Pastor Pete" Roy
If you were not able to be with us when Seminarian Peter Roy was here to preach, then you missed the challenge he presented for our congregation! Preaching about "the abundance" we all have of things we use, things we put aside, and things we have forgotten about; Pete challenged us to participate in a "40 Day Collection". He asked us to look around our homes and take ONE item each day out of our abundance to collect in a box and to continue to do this for 40 days. He also suggested that we could donate the item(s) and keep a record of the donations we have made during the next 40 days. He picked this number of days because it was his 40th birthday....and also because Rally Day is 40 days away (well, actually 42 days from last Sunday...but who's counting?). Items collected could range from money, household items, clothes, books, toys, food...any item you or your family decides on each of the 40 days. On Rally Day, Pete will return to DFLC and he requested we bring our donation list and/or our collection to church so these items can be blessed as they make their way to homes, organizations, churches, and/or individuals who might really have need of them. Join DFLC in "Pete's 40 Day Challenge" this summer beginning today!
Annual reports
It's that time again... just a reminder to everyone that the Annual Meeting is around the corner and will be here before we know it. If you find some free time and want to start thinking about your update for the Annual Report, that would be great. The Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, November 21, following the 10:30 Worship Service. Please give your reports to Lisa McHugh no later than Sunday, October 17, which is the deadline for report. That gives us just enough time for getting the report copied, collated, etc. so it can be distributed as early as possible prior to the meeting. Please email reports if possible, if not please leave in Lisa's mailbox either in the church office or in the hallway mailbox. Thank you.
Pinecrest Lutheran Leadership Ministries
Pinecrest Lutheran Leadership Ministries, which is committed to developing leaders for the Church and from which DFLC has benefitted greatly, is having their second annual Oktoberfest on October 2, 2010 from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Plattedeutsche Park Restaurant and Biergarten (1132 Hempstead Turnpike in Franklin Square, New York). There are a number of opportunities for you to contribute to Pinecrest through this event. You can donate raffles prizes, you can put an ad in the journal, and you can get a table and sell merchandise, come out and enjoy the festivities. The first prize for the raffle is an iPad. The second prize for the raffle is $500. Hedy McQuillan (914-761-7495 or ghmcq12@optimum.net) is selling tickets (both raffle and admission) and answering questions for this event.
Bishop Mark Hanson
The Rev. Mark S. Hanson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), will answer questions on a variety of topics from members of the denomination on Sunday, September 19. Bishop Hanson will take questions during an hour-long "Town Hall Forum" beginning at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The forum will be webcast live from Chicago, where Bishop Hanson will be joined by an audience of ELCA members. The audience will be able to ask questions of the presiding bishop. Online viewers will be invited to submit questions at http://www.ELCA.org/townhall on the ELCA website.

CHRISTIAN PRE-SCHOOL
Maryellen Venditto Scholarship Fund
Christian Pre-School has decided to rename our scholarship fund after our beloved staff member, Maryellen Venditto, who died suddenly on July 6th. Our staff as well as the Dobbs Ferry community will continue to miss her smile and laughter and her good works. Please include the Venditto family in your prayers as her husband Anthony and young daughters, Gabrielle and Regina, will appreciate your support and the strength and peace that only God can give.
If you would like to contribute to this fund in Maryellen's memory, please place your donation in the offering plate (or mail it to DFLC) and make a notation to the scholarship fund on the check. We thank you. Deacon Sharon Brennen

OUTREACH NEWS
Bread for the World
Bread for the World is a (Christian) organization that urges our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad by changing policies and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to exist. Over the years Bread for the World has won far reaching changes for those that are hungry and poor. In addition to supporting policies that provide aid to developing countries Bread for the World has helped to strengthen national nutrition programs which have helped millions of families in this country.
At present there is a drive underway to help Bread for the World get 10, 000 new members by October, 2010 (10k by 10/10). You can help this effort by signing up to join Bread for the World. There are sign up sheets located on the bulletin board outside the church office. Other ways to help could include encouraging friends and other worshippers to join. Once you have joined you will receive information on some of the ongoing initiatives of this important organization and the cause for which they fight. If you would like more information, you can visit the Bread for the World web site at www.bread.org or speak to Martha and Kevin Phillips.

UPDATE ON OUR BOOKSALE - $596.03 raised to date
With your help, the summer book sale has raised a total of $596.03 toward our goal of $600! We have been blessed with a matching grant from Thrivent. For every $3 donated, Thrivent will match $1. Once we raise $600, Thrivent will provide an additional $200.
100% of the monies raised will support the work of Dr. & Mrs. Hartwig, our missionaries in Tanzania. The book sale will continue through August.
Special thanks to the following families for donating large supplies of books: the Bauermeisters, Deacon Sharon Brennen, CPS, Judith DeMaria, Nancy Justiniano, Laurel Kossow & the Washingtons. Thanks to everyone else who either donated a book or made a donation. Special thanks to Deacon Sharon Brennen & the CPS community for their support.
A MEETING WITH DR. & MRS. HARTWIG - HIGHLIGHTS
On Saturday, June 26th, we were blessed with a visit from Dr. & Mrs. Kristopher Hartwig, our missionaries in Tanzania. 16 people from our congregation joined together to hear their presentation.
Our congregation is supporting their work through the ELCA Companion Synod's program. Dr. Hartwig is a US trained medical doctor and Lutheran missionary. He is developing hospice programs to serve cancer and AIDS patients in Tanzania, one of the poorest countries in the world.
10% of DFLC's "First Fruits" (outreach) goes to support the work of our missionaries in Tanzania. In addition, all the monies raised at our summer book sale will be donated as a special additional gift. We can all feel good knowing that our contributions are having such a big impact in helping our brothers and sister in Christ in Tanzania!
Some highlights from his presentation are provided below:
(1) The financial support Dr. Hartwig has received, has enabled him to expand his team and they now serve 15,000 patients a year! The first two years in Tanzania, Dr. Hartwig's team was seeing approx. 500 patients a year. With funding (supplied by DFLC & others), he was able to expand his hospice team and acquire vehicles to help the team reach out to more individuals in need. The patients the team is ministering to (for the most part) have HIV/AIDS or cancer. They are also among the poorest people in the world.
(2) The cost of HIV/AIDS anti-viral medication is only $25 per month per person. The drugs are life saving and have been acquired through the Tanzanian government with donor monies (US donations included). Approximately, 11,000 of Dr. Hartwig's clients have HIV. Approximately, 7,000 of them are on the anti-viral drugs and the drugs are extending their lives.
(3) Approx. 7% of people in Tanzania have HIV/AIDS. The team is providing anti-viral medication to patients with the disease, education on prevention of the disease and teaching people who have it - how to live with it. Dr. Hartwig reported that the drugs are life saving and patients are living for long periods of time on the medication. He reported that many patients can work, raise their children, etc. while taking the medication. For a mother with young children, the drugs can save not only her life, but the lives of her children, who otherwise would be orphans. They can provide a mother with the gift of life and time to raise her children & provide food and care for them in a very poor country.
(4) The team is receiving grant funding from the US and the grants have, thus far, been extended. However, a big grant from the US government finishes at the end of this calendar year. Dr. Hartwig and his team are not certain where or how future funds will come. However, they have been very successful with money usage to date, having had 3 successful audits, leading to permission, thus far, to continue spending the grant.
(5) The Lutheran religion is one of the fastest growing religions in Tanzania. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT), a member of the Lutheran World Federation, is made up of over 2.5 million people in 20 dioceses, approximately 6.5% of the population of Tanzania. The ELCA is reaching out to those in need through healthcare (they have 24 hospitals) & education (the KEMPS school is one of more than 60 schools) in Tanzania.
(6) A little bit of money goes a long way in Tanzania. The average annual income in Tanzania is only $350. Even a small gift goes a long way toward helping our brothers & sisters in Christ who are in need in Tanzania. DFLC's gifts are making a big impact! Dr. & Mrs. Hartwig thank you for your continued support of their work. They ask for your prayers as they continue to serve those in need.= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
PLEASE HELP DURING "BACK TO SCHOOL" SALES
During these challenging economic times, we are all trying to stretch a dollar. We are once again asking for your help in acquiring necessary supplies at reduced rates during the "Back to School" sales. During these special summer sales, items are offered for "free," a few cents, "buy one, get one free" or "buy 2, get 2 free." It is a great time for us to stock up on supplies we know we will need in the fall at greatly reduced rates. The stores usually limit how many of the sale items that any one individual can purchase - so we are asking for your help! We tried this project last year for the first time and it was a very successful effort due to your overwhelming support!
Update - Thanks for your support! We have already emptied the bins several times!
Christian Pre-School - items needed:

You can choose which of the above mentioned causes you wish to donate to. The Outreach Team wishes to thank Audrey Iorio for her donations of children's backpacks for the Haiti school kit projects. Thanks for your help! The DFLC Outreach Team

Haiti, Six Months Later: An Update from Lutheran World Relief
Baltimore, July 12, 2010 - Six months after Haiti's devastating 7.0 earthquake, Lutheran World Relief (LWR) remains hard at work assisting those who are still dealing with its aftermath and will be for years to come. LWR, with a 14-year history in Haiti, is focusing the majority of its efforts on underserved rural populations. Many rural communities found themselves hosting an influx of people who fled the capital city of Port-au-Prince after the quake, putting a severe strain on already limited resources.
"It's a tenuous situation," said Alex Wilson, LWR's deputy regional director for Latin America, who visited Haiti in June. "Lots of families left the city initially, but then went back in search of shelter, work and educational opportunities. However, the situation in Port-au-Prince remains critical, and many have now returned to their communities of origin a second time."
LWR is working with local partners to support rural communities through cash-for-work programs to build soil and water conservation structures, distribution of additional seeds in preparation for the rainy season and training on agricultural production, to ensure that people have some income and that farmers are able to grow sufficient food to feed everyone. In addition, LWR is supporting the construction of latrines and low-cost water filter systems to accommodate the additional populations that have fled to rural areas.
"We lost one child during the earthquake in Port-au-Prince, and we didn't even have time for a funeral," said Monique Orestil, a participant in LWR's program in Maissade, a rural community located about a four hour drive north of Port-au-Prince. "I brought my remaining five children here, and LWR helped me participate in a cash-for-work program. It was like God landing in Maissade. I left Port-au-Prince without anything, but now I can work for my family." As a member of the global aid consortium ACT Alliance, LWR has also supported life-saving measures in and around Port-au-Prince, since the days immediately after the earthquake. ACT Alliance members have provided food, water and sanitation, shelter and other services to more than 341,000 people.
"We are in a transition period now, moving from immediate relief efforts into the rehabilitation phase so that rural families can re-establish their livelihoods," Wilson said. LWR, taking a long-term approach to rehabilitation and recovery, plans to work with earthquake-affected communities for five years.
"This was a devastating crisis," Wilson added. "Recovery will take a long time."
On the domestic side, LWR has mobilized its supporters to advocate to the U.S. government for cancellation of Haiti's debt, and for emergency funding to support reconstruction programs. As a result of advocacy efforts by many organizations and individuals, in February the Obama Administration announced support for canceling Haiti's nearly $1 billion debt and in April, President Obama signed the Debt Relief for Earthquake Recovery Act into law. Earlier this month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a supplemental funding bill that includes crucial funds for reconstruction and agriculture efforts in the country. LWR continues working to ensure that policy-makers hear the voices and understand the needs of Haitian civil society. Also in the U.S., LWR has partnered with Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries (NLOM) in an unprecedented effort to have summer camp participants work to assemble 32,000 LWR health kits - enough for an entire shipping container - to be sent to those in need in Haiti.
"I'm delighted that LWR sought us out with the idea," said Dave Coker, executive director of NLOM. "And I'm excited for the kids who will come to camp this summer. The health kit service project will help them connect to their faith in powerful ways."
THRIVENT CHOICE UPDATE
Choice DollarsSM is Here
The launch of Thrivent Choice continues with the introduction of Choice Dollars. In July and August, eligible benefit members will receive a letter with information on their designated Choice Dollars for 2010 and details on how they can help direct Choice Dollar funds to thousands of Lutheran organizations and congregations (including Dobbs Ferry Lutheran Church). The letter will also include the Terms and Conditions of the Thrivent Choice program. Here are some basics on how the program will work:
* How do I help direct the Choice Dollars designated to me?
Once you receive your Choice Dollars letter this summer, you can visit Thrivent.com/thriventchoice or call 800-THRIVENT (800-847-4836) and at the prompt, say "Thrivent Choice."
* Where can I help direct the Choice Dollars designated to me?
You can help direct funding to more than 17,000 national and local Lutheran organizations in the Thrivent Choice catalog, including Lutheran camps, schools, seminaries, campus ministries-even your local Lutheran congregation (including Dobbs Ferry Lutheran Church).
* What if my preferred Lutheran organization isn't listed in the Thrivent Choice catalog?
Complete the Recommend an Organization form and we will follow up with the organization. If it qualifies and is approved, we will add it to the program. Although thousands of organizations have enrolled in Thrivent Choice, there are some that haven't yet.
* Can I split my designated Choice Dollars between organizations?
Yes, you can help direct your designated Choice Dollars to as many organizations as you like from our catalog. (Minimum direction is $5 to each organization.)
* Can I automatically help direct my designated Choice Dollars to an organization?
Yes, you can set up a recurring direction on the Thrivent Choice website. It's an easy way to request and recommend funding for an organization that you care about on an ongoing basis. By setting up a recurring direction:
o Choice Dollars are directed when the balance reaches $10 or more.
o You only have to set up the process once.
o You're able to change or remove it at any time.
o You will receive an email notification prior to each recurring direction.
* Do Choice Dollars expire?
Choice Dollars designated during the calendar year can be directed until March 31 of the following year. For example, you can help direct Choice Dollars designated to you in 2010 until March 31, 2011.
Questions?
If you have questions or would like to offer feedback about Thrivent Choice, contact Thrivent at 800-THRIVENT (800-847-4836) and at the prompt, say "Thrivent Choice." You also can send an email to mail@thrivent.com.
