Biography: Deacon Sharon Brennen

Deacon Sharon Brennen

Sharon was born in Yonkers and attended a local Reformed church before moving to Dobbs Ferry at the age of 12. A neighbor brought her to Dobbs Ferry Lutheran Church, where she was eventually confirmed, and where she serves as Deacon today.

Her working career began as a secretary at CIBA-GEIGY in Ardsley, where she worked for five years in the Personnel Department. Once her son was pre-school age, she became involved in the church’s Christian Pre-School as a teacher. She went back to school at Westchester Community College to obtain an Early Childhood Certificate and became Director of the Christian Pre-School program in 1987, and continues to work in this ministry today. She is also Director of the Summer Program and of the Vacation Bible School program.

During her time at DFLC, Sharon has been active in many other groups and ministries including the Worship & Music, Programming Team, Education Team, Church Council, Pastoral Care Team, Lay Eucharistic Ministry, Community Relations, Choir, Pastoral Search Committee, Altar Guild, Hospitality, and her particular Diaconal ministry—PrimeTimers. She has also served on Sundays as Assistant Minister, Acolyte, and Homilist as assists in the Healing Service. Regular Bible study and daily prayer gives support and continues to strengthen a life of faith.

In 2001, after two years of study in the Diakonia program, Sharon began her Diaconal Internship at Dobbs Ferry Lutheran Church and was set apart in 2003 as a Deacon. She was called to Dobbs Ferry Lutheran and the Metro NY Synod, where she continues to celebrate the many blessings God has given her, and joyfully serving wherever she is led.

Sharon’s husband of 35 years (as of 2006), Jim, is retired but working as Parking Enforcement Officer in Irvington as well as serving his community in the Fire Dept., Ambulance Corps, and Recreation Dept, as well as being a member of the Choir and a Lector at his church, Immaculate Conception. Sharon’s son, Kevin, and daughter-in-law, Heather, reside in Harrisburg, PA, with their new born daughter, Riley.
